Hurricane ZIP Coverage at a Glance
Official Hurricane and archival addresses consistently identify one postal code for the city mailing name. The research did not verify a second USPS code for an address officially styled Hurricane. That makes the coverage table short, but the boundary note matters: delivery territory can extend beyond incorporated limits.
| ZIP | Areas Covered | Post Office Verification | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 25526 | Hurricane postal city and surrounding delivery territory associated with the Hurricane mailing name | USPS ZIP Lookup by full address, city and state, or code | May not match the incorporated Hurricane boundary; no official boundary polygon was located |
Nearby Putnam postal names include Teays Valley, Scott Depot, Culloden, Winfield, and Poca. Proximity does not place them in the Hurricane ZIP code directory. Run the exact street through USPS before assigning its preferred city and code. A city-edge parcel may carry a neighboring postal city, while an address using Hurricane may sit outside city services.
Hurricane City Hall at 3255 Teays Valley Road and other official references use 25526. That evidence verifies the city's main mailing code, not every address inside a map line. USPS did not render an address result during unattended inspection, and no official city-to-ZIP crosswalk was found.
Searching Hurricane ZIP Records
The USPS ZIP Code Lookup has three useful modes. “By Address” is the strongest because it begins with a complete delivery point. “By City and State” returns codes associated with a postal city. “Cities by ZIP” reverses the query and returns recognized city or post-office names. None of these modes identifies a person at an address.
| USPS Mode | Fields | Required Input | What the Result Means |
|---|---|---|---|
| By Address | Company, street, apartment or suite, city, state, ZIP | Street, city, and state | Preferred or recognized postal form for that delivery point |
| By City and State | City and state | Both | Codes associated with the postal city, not the city limits |
| Cities by ZIP | ZIP | Code | Recognized postal-city names, not resident names |
Enter apartment or suite data when known. Keep the returned preferred city even if a familiar local label differs. USPS warns that a successful address result does not confirm that a named person or company is there. The postal result belongs at the start of a lookup, not the end.
Finding Hurricane Residents by ZIP
No inspected official portal returns a complete Hurricane person list from a ZIP filter. The assessor exposes street, owner, parcel, mailing-address, legal-description, and other fields, but no ZIP box. MapWV accepts E-911 address and parcel criteria, not a code. The voter lookup requires first name, last name, and date of birth. A lawful voter-file request is separate from the public single-person form.
- Verify a full street address in USPS By Address. Save the preferred city and returned code exactly as shown.
- Select Putnam County in the WV Property Assessment search. Use an owner name or any part of the physical street address, then read the physical and mailing fields separately.
- Open a matching parcel in MapWV. Compare its E-911 address, parcel ID, community, legal description, and assessment link.
- For a known person, use the voter lookup with name and birth date. For a larger lawful research need, ask Putnam County Clerk what file and sort options are currently available.
- Once the code narrows to a named road, use the Hurricane street directory for the address-level record chain.
A ZIP-wide search is therefore a staged process. It begins with postal verification, moves to Putnam parcel or public voter records, and ends by checking the exact address. Do not infer household members from a parcel owner or turn a mailing list into proof of occupancy.
Hurricane Portals Without ZIP Filters
The missing ZIP field is a practical research fact. In the WV Property Assessment search, selecting Putnam County activates dependent district and parcel controls. Search choices include owner name, any part of a physical street address, full parcel ID, property class, tax class, land use, appraisal and sale ranges, mailing address, deed book and page, and legal description. The result can link to the Property Viewer.
| Portal | Useful Search Fields | ZIP Field | Best Hurricane Workaround |
|---|---|---|---|
| WV Property Assessment | County, owner, street, parcel, mailing address, legal description | None surfaced | Search Putnam plus a street or owner, then verify output |
| MapWV | E-911 address, parcel number, owner, property address, map geometry | None surfaced | Use the USPS-approved street address and inspect the parcel |
| WV voter lookup | First name, last name, date of birth | None | Check one known person or request a lawful file from the clerk |
The assessor's owner mailing address may contain a code, but it can point away from the parcel. That is where tax correspondence goes. The physical or situs address identifies where the land lies. Neither field alone proves that an owner lives on the parcel.
Note: MapWV's E-911 address search does not accept rural routes or post-office boxes, so use a physical street address whenever possible.
Hurricane ZIP and City Limits
Hurricane lies in Putnam County but is not the county seat. City departments handle municipal functions from Hurricane, while deeds, assessment, tax, most elections, and county courts route to Winfield. The mailing city does not settle which government serves a parcel. City service, county service, Putnam Public Service District coverage, and E-911 addressing may cut across a postal label.
Near the edge, compare five records: the USPS preferred city and code, assessor physical address, MapWV parcel context, the city or county office responsible for the land, and the deed's legal description. Keep the mailing address and situs value as separate fields. If an old number no longer works, use subdivision, lot, block, map, parcel, or metes-and-bounds language from the deed.
Boundary check. ZIP 25526 describes delivery territory; it does not certify Hurricane incorporation, voting district, school zone, utility provider, or current occupant.
Reading Hurricane Postal Terms
Postal and Census terms often look alike on a map but serve different jobs. Defining them prevents a broad statistical area from being treated as an exact delivery or resident boundary.
- ZIP code
- A USPS routing code for mail delivery. Its service territory is not the same as a municipal border.
- ZIP+4
- The basic five digits plus four more that narrow delivery to a smaller segment, such as one side of a street or a group of boxes.
- PO-box ZIP
- A code used chiefly or solely for post-office boxes. No such separate Hurricane code was verified in the research.
- Unique ZIP
- A code assigned to a high-volume institution or organization. No Hurricane unique code was verified.
- Carrier route
- A delivery path assigned to a postal carrier, which can cross lines people think of as neighborhood borders.
- ZCTA
- A Census ZIP Code Tabulation Area, built from Census blocks as a statistical approximation rather than an official USPS delivery polygon.
The Census ZCTA reference can supply area-wide population context, but it cannot certify a delivery address. Commercial map overlays have the same limit. Use them for orientation and return to USPS for postal form.
Hurricane ZIP Population Context
Census QuickFacts reports that Hurricane had 6,961 residents in the 2020 Census and a July 1, 2025 estimate of 7,367. The city had 3.71 square miles of land in 2020, with density of 1,874.3 people per square mile. Those are city-scale facts, not verified totals for the full 25526 delivery area.
Do not attach Census traits to a named person, street, or household. The city and the postal territory can differ, and a ZCTA is only an approximation. The numbers are useful for understanding why Hurricane records span municipal offices, Putnam systems, and nearby corridor labels. They cannot convert the ZIP code directory into a list of all residents.
Hurricane Addresses Before ZIP Codes
Older records require place names rather than a modern ZIP. Hurricane developed around Hurricane Bridge, then railroad-era sources used Hurricane Station. The town incorporated in 1888. A deed, directory, newspaper, or vital entry may use one of those names, a creek or road, or a legal description with no current street number.
Pair the historic name with the date of the document. Search Hurricane Bridge, Hurricane Station, and Hurricane in newspaper and directory sources. Then match the tract through a deed, plat, subdivision, lot and block, or parcel description. The Hurricane Breeze offers a long local trail on WVU microfilm from May 23, 1913 to the present. It can bridge names and address changes, but a newspaper mention still needs an official source when identity matters.
No verified Hurricane split year, postal realignment schedule, street-renumbering table, or complete city-limit overlay was located. Avoid filling those gaps with a modern map. The Putnam courthouse directory provides OES/911 contacts, while original deeds, plats, city annexation minutes, and historic papers supply the evidence for an old address.
Nearby Names in Hurricane Searches
Teays Valley, Scott Depot, Culloden, Winfield, and Poca can appear close to Hurricane in Putnam County research. Each needs its own USPS result. A search should preserve the exact postal city shown on the source rather than replacing it with the nearest well-known place. County custody can still be the same even when the mailing name differs.
For a questionable address, run USPS By Address, compare the assessor and MapWV, then call the right city or county custodian. City Hall, the Building Department, police, utilities, and street functions use Hurricane contacts. County property, tax, deed, election, and court records generally point to Winfield. This municipal and county split explains why 25526 alone cannot choose the correct records office.
